Geear’s Inbound team tested which content format does the most for AI search visibility: individual blog posts, a comprehensive long-form guide, or both. Three credit union clients each published a different format on the same homebuying topics. AI visibility and citations rose for all three, and the client that paired a guide with supporting blogs saw a 127.5% increase in AI visibility.
The Strategy
Does publishing individual blog posts, a comprehensive long-form guide, or a combination of both have the greatest impact on AI search visibility?
Define the Audience and Topics
We targeted the Cautious First-Time Homebuyer across three subtopics: mortgage loan types, home affordability and budgeting, and the homebuying and approval process.
Build and Localize the Prompts
We developed nine AI search prompts across those subtopics and localized them to each credit union’s market, so every client was measured on the same prompt templates.
Assign a Content Strategy to Each Client
Each client was assigned one of three content strategies: three blog posts (Client 1), one long-form guide (Client 2), or one guide plus three supporting blogs (Client 3).
Track and Report Visibility and Citations
Gumshoe AI measured visibility before and after publishing, and we counted citations once the content went live.

We hypothesized that all three versions would increase AI visibility and citations. We expected the long-form guide paired with supporting blog posts to produce the strongest increase, followed by a long-form guide alone, with individual blog posts alone performing the weakest.
1st place: Client 3, both (1 long-form guide plus 3 supporting blogs)
2nd place: Client 2, guide (1 long-form guide only)
3rd place: Client 1, blogs (3 blogs only)
Subtopic 1, Mortgage Loan Types: Best fixed rate mortgage credit union mortgage in [CITY]; Best FHA mortgage credit union mortgage in [CITY]; Best first time homebuyer loan in [CITY]
Subtopic 2, Home Affordability & Budgeting: How much house can I afford in [CITY]?; Budget for home loan in [CITY]; Affordable home loan in [CITY]
Subtopic 3, Homebuying & Approval Process: Credit union mortgage application process; What do I need for a credit union home loan application?; Credit union vs. mortgage broker for home loan
Result 01
AI visibility naturally fluctuates, so we compared average visibility during the first few weeks before and after the content went live.
16% → 19.5%
Client 1: Blogs only
30% → 33%
Client 2: Guide only
17% → 39%
Client 3: Guide + blogs
Result 02
Across 9 prompts and 35 conversations, 55 brands were mentioned in AI responses. Client 3 showed up in 51% of those responses.

Reading the Data
These are directional findings from three client tests, with no control group. They are not proof that one format outperforms another.
Important considerations:
What the results do show: AI visibility and citations rose for all three clients after new content was published, and AI platforms cited the new content directly.
The test favored combining guides and blogs on visibility, but no format won across every metric.
→ Every approach saw gains.
Visibility and overall citations rose for all three clients after publication.
→ Results varied by metric.
Client 3 (guide + blogs) led on visibility and on citations to new content. Client 1 (blogs only) led on overall citation growth.
→ One guide out-cited three blogs.
Client 2’s guide earned 35 citations vs. 11 for Client 1’s three blogs over comparable windows. Client 1 still saw the larger overall citation lift.
Pair guides with supporting blogs. Try the combined approach with more clients to see whether the visibility gain repeats.
Prioritize topic cluster strategies. Keep building content around core topics, and monitor specific prompts and citations to see which assets AI platforms are actually referencing.
Let the citation data guide the next content. Use the prompts and assets that earn citations to decide which topics and formats to build on, and which to rethink.
